I have a handful of servers that are failing in the monitoring system with no response eventhough they appear to be configured and running.
To make this easier we have developed a script using microsoft s powershell framework to remotely enable snmp on windows devices that run on windows server 2008 2008 r2 2012 2012 r2 and 2016.
On windows server 2012 2016 and 2019 click next after completing step 2 until you reach features where you can select and install snmp service.
We are looking to use snmp version 3 for monitoring our windows 2008 r2 sp1 servers however it looks like windows 2008 r2 doesn t support version 3.
Start server manager and go to features and then click add feature after add features wizard will appear on the screen locate snmp services section and add this feature to installation list by ticking checkboxes next to appropriate services on the list as shown on screen below.

In windows 2003 you just opened the snmp service properties and configured those settings using the agent traps and security tabs.
When i tried the same method on windows 2008 server those tabs are missing.
Prior editions of windows xp and windows server 2003 included snmp support but only with ipv4 even if the ipv6 stack was installed.
With the release of server 2008 snmp simple network management protocol is now supported using ipv6.

On windows server 2008 you find the snmp service under features add features in the server manager that opened after completing step 2.
